Director of The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, and The Dreamers, Bernardo Bertolucci was one of the greats of Italian cinema. In 1987 his acclaimed epic The Last Emperor – made with British producer Jeremy Thomas (Naked Lunch, Crash) – swept the 60th Academy Awards winning nine Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director.

Following the life of Pu Yi, the last of the Emperors of China, from his birth in 1906 through his childhood in the fortress-like Forbidden City and his later misguided collaboration with the Japanese in World War II, The Last Emperor tells the history of China through the eyes of the man brought up to believe he was the country’s divine ruler.

Filmed on location in China, Bertolucci and Thomas were the first western filmmakers to be allowed access to previously forbidden locations. Together with a cast including John Lone, Joan Chen, and Peter O’Toole, and director of photography Vittorio Storaro’s lushly evocative cinematography, they created a classic film of sweeping scope and delicate intimacy that stunned critics and audiences alike.

Die optische Umsetzung der Blu-ray hinterlässt insgesamt gesehen einen zwiespältigen Eindruck. Während die ausgezeichneten Außenaufnahmen dem Monumentalfilm die verdiente Optik verleihen, zeigen die Szenerien im Palastinnern deutlich sichtbare Mängel. Die DTS-HD Tonspur überrascht mit hohem Niveau, allerdings hätte man sich etwas mehr Dynamik gewünscht. Beim Bonusmaterial bietet sich einzig das stündige Making-of an, in dem für Genreinteressierte viel Wissenswertes vermittelt wird.

Die BD stellt gegenüber der DVD einen klaren Mehrwert dar. Aufgrund der schwankenden Schärfe sowie fehlender Plastizität erfüllt die vorliegende Blu-ray die hohen Erwartungen nicht ganz und wird dem opulenten Filmset als HD-Medium nur teilweise gerecht. Bertoluccis Epos ist keine sinologische Chronik; im Vordergrund steht die minutiöse Beobachtung Pu Yi?s, dem letzten Monarchen der Qîng-Dynastie. Mit seiner elegischen Erzählweise trifft der historische Klassiker jedoch nicht jedermanns Geschmack. Zusammen mit der verschwenderischen Optik und den überzeugenden Darstellerleistungen muss Der letzte Kaiser als ein bedeutender Katalogtitel aber durchaus empfohlen werden.

Klasse Inszeniert, erstklassig Verfilmt und passend besetzt. Mir gefällt der Film ziemlich gut, doch manchmal ist er etwas langatmig.

Der Film ansich ist Spitze! Tolle Bilder, tolle Geschichte, toll umgesetzt, aber leider muss ich dringend vom Kauf abraten! Habe den Film blind gekauft und leider erst danach festgestellt, dass es nur die deutsche Originalfassung ist! Keine Originalsprache, sondern nur deutsch! Ich verstehe einfach nicht, wie man Film auf DVD brennen kann und nur eine Sprachfassung draufbrennt! Gerade da liegt doch einer der Vorteile der DVD!

Die an sich hoch interessante Geschichte des letzten Kaisers von China wird in sehr kühler und gestelzter Manier erzählt. Ich kann damit wenig anfangen. Die Aufnahmen sind imposant, die Figuren lassen mich kalt.
