In 1880s Arizona, newly appointed, reform-minded prison warden Woodward W. Lopeman (Henry Fonda) has his hands full with inmate Paris Pitman (Kirk Douglas), a charming crook on a 10-year bit. Though Pitman's obsessed with escaping in order to recover $500,000 in stolen loot he's got stashed away, his scheming might lead to a surprising end.
