Der junge britische Autor Basil erbt die Braunkohlemine seines Vaters auf Kreta. Voller Tatendrang verlässt er England und macht sich auf den Weg ins fremde Griechenland. Dort lernt er den Griechen Alexis Sorbas kennen - einen impulsiven Lebemann, der Basil die griechischen Bräuche und die griechischen Frauen näher bringt. Während sich Sorbas um die Ausbeutung der Mine kümmert, verliebt sich Basil unsterblich in eine attraktive Witwe. Doch weder die Liebe noch das Geschäft mit der Mine stehen unter einem guten Stern. Beides endet in einer Katastrophe.
