Description

The Secret of Kells is a magical animated classic that tells the story of Brendan, a young monk whose life is changed forever when he is initiated into the secrets of the Book of Kells and embarks on an extraordinary adventure, meeting fearsome monsters, Vikings, and a serpent god along the way. In a remote medieval outpost of Ireland, young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying a book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

Sind wir uns erstmal darüber im Klaren: In der Zeit von Cyberpunk & technoidem Wahn einen Trickfilm über die christliche Buchkunst des 9.Jahrhunderts zu schaffen, ist sonderlich gewagt und ohne Gleichen! Es ist, als würde das alte 'Book of Kells' in diesem Film zum Leben erwachen. Kein anderer Animationsfilm hat je die ornamentale Dimension so lebendig und kunstvoll in den Bilderfluss eingebunden! Darob und ob der grandiosen Farbgebung kommt mensch gar nicht mehr aus dem Staunen raus. Genau so, wie das ursprüngliche 'Book of Kells' aus einer einzigartigen Verbindung zwischen christlichem und keltischem Geist erstanden ist, werden hier christliche Mystik und Naturmystik zu einem wunderbaren, sich ergänzenden Paar vereint. Die filigrane, von der keltischen Tradition inspirierte, Musik von Bruno Coulais, ist dazu nur noch so etwas, wie der alles krönende Segen ...

Ein wirklich wunderschöner, magischer Animationsfilm den ich durch Zufall entdeckt habe :D Meiner Meinung nach zu Recht für den Oscar als bester Animationsfilm nominiert! Die Bilder sind einfach schön und wie in der Beschreibung erwähnt in einem sehr speziellen Stil, ganz anders als ich es von Filmen dieser Art sonst gewohnt bin. Die Charaktere des Films sind einfach liebenswürdig und die Geschichte (die Rahmenhandlung dreht sich um die Invasion der Wikinger in Irland) ist wundervoll ausgearbeitet worden. Ein wahres Kleinod der Filmgeschichte :)
