Das Strassenkind Heathcliff wird von dem alten Earnshaw aufgenommen und wächst auf dem Landgut 'Wuthering Heights' zusammen mit Earnshaws eigenen Kindern Hindley und Cathy auf. Als der alte Mann aber stirbt, übernimmt Hindley das Gut und tyrannisiert Heathcliff, der fortan als Stallbursche arbeiten muss.
