Looking to explore the New World, Walter Raleigh befriends Lord Leicester, who introduces the young explorer to the Queen Elizabeth I. A friendship arises between the aging Elizabeth and Raleigh. But the Queen becomes angry at her youthful new friend when she finds out that Raleigh is having an affair with the Queen's beautiful lady-in-waiting. Feeling betrayed Elizabeth has Raleigh imprisoned in the infamous Tower of London. But she soon softens and changes her mind, allowing him to take ships across the sea and marry his love.
The new world is waiting to be conquered and Sir Walter Raleigh is just the man to do it. Though Raleigh only has designs on the treasures to be had, the queen has romantic designs on him, but he's married. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Black-and-White) Costume Design.
