Chief of detectives Robert T. Ironside is shot down by a sniper's bullet whilst vacationing at a remote cabin. Surviving the assassination attempt, Ironside is left paralysed from the waist down. Confined to a wheelchair, he becomes the head of his own special police unit, fighting crime with intelligence and action, aided by a crack team of investigators on the streets of San Francisco.
