Magnifique hommage aux âmes artistes et à leurs tourments, ce film du grand réalisateur Carol Reed est d'une splendeur visuelle et d'une profondeur qui réjouit le coeur de tout vrai cinéphile.
Heston se montre ici tout particulièrement en phase avec son personnage et Harrison campe un pape Jules II aussi odieux que vulnérable.
