L'Africaine was first performed at San Francisco Opera on November 3, 1972; the current performance, the original French version, is a revival of the new production of the grande opéra created by the opera house for it's program in September 1988. It is the last work of the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer. The French libretto was written by Eugene Scribe. This is an opera in 3 acts and depicts fictional events in the life of the explorer Vasco da Gama.
