Gotthard erzählt, wie ab 1872 der damals längste Eisenbahntunnel der Welt gebaut wurde für jene Zeit eine ingenieurstechnische Meisterleistung, die aber viele Opfer forderte und letztlich die moderne Schweiz nachhaltig prägte. Im Mittelpunkt der Geschichte stehen die Schweizer Fuhrmannstochter Anna, der deutsche Ingenieur Max und der italienische Mineur Tommaso, deren Freundschaft im Verlauf der Handlung auf eine harte Probe gestellt wird.

L'ho trovato davvero bello. Un film che fino all'ultimo ti tiene con il fiato sospeso. Consiglio a tutti di vederlo. Oltre al suo valore indirettamente storico e informativo si tratta principalmente di un film di intrattenimento. Colpi di scena, storie d'amore, un po' di rabbia, tristezza e commozione ed ecco a voi tutto il fascino del Gottardo e il sudore di chi l'ha costruito. Il cinema svizzero ultimamente sta facendo grossi progressi!
