Il vecchi Borgen ha tre figli: Mikkel, sposato con Inger, Johannes e Andersen. Quest'ultimo, che è il più giovane dei tre, è innamorato di Anna, la figlia del sarto Peter; ma al suo matrimonio s'oppongono, per motivi religiosi, tanto Peter che Borgen.
