1998 saw the long anticipated return of Mercedes to Le Mans with the exciting and unusual CLK-LM. Much was expected of the mid-engined, V8 powered racer but it would face stiff opposition from Toyota, Nissan, McLaren and Le Mans titans Porsche. America s Panoz team bounced back from their difficulat debut in 1997 to score a solid finish with their front-engined Esperante GT-R 1, delighting their many fans around the course. BMW debuted their light, low and lithe V12 LM, built in partnership with Williams, but their first race proved anything but easy.
