Novembre 1924. Le magnat de la presse William Randolph Hearst et sa maîtresse, l`actrice Marion Davies, invitent un petit groupe de personnalités sur leur yacht pour une croisière au large de la Californie. Il y a là le célèbre Charlie Chaplin, la romancière anglaise Elynor Glyn, le producteur de cinéma Thomas H. Ince et l`ambitieuse journaliste à scandale Louella Parsons. Découvrant que sa starlette le trompe avec Chaplin, Hearst tente d`assassiner ce dernier...
