Un ritratto spietato e crudo della guerra vista attraverso le vicende dei tre protagonisti. Christian è un ufficiale nazista che per brama di potere partecipa con entusiasmo all`invasione tedesca, finché non scopre la vera funzione dei campi di concentramento. Noah è un timido e coraggioso soldato di origine ebraica costretto a lottare ogni giorno contro i pesanti pregiudizi razziali e Michael è un ricco impresario americano che non è riuscito ad evitare il servizio di leva.
