La storia è ambientata durante la guerra nei Balcani e osserva da vicino l'amore tra due persone che non hanno più nulla da perdere. Il film è basato sul cortometraggio Our Life, scritto a quattro mani dal regista Kusturica e da sua figlia Dunja. Il tema principale è la semplice storia d'amore tra un uomo (Emir Kusturica) e sua moglie (Monica Bellucci), che vivono in una zona montuosa della Serbia. Un film al contempo concettuale e violento.
