Il dottor Rassiter è un chirurgo estetico che, dopo aver eseguito un`operazione mal riuscita, fugge in Francia per paura di venire arrestato. Durante la fuga ha un incidente stradale che gli sfigura il viso. Cambiati i connotati, cambia pure identità, sotto il nome di Bernard Schuler. Diventato proprietario di un circo, inizia a girare l`Europa e a diventare famoso, anche grazie agli artisti che si esibiscono, la maggior parte dei quali sono tutte persone ricercate dalla polizia, alle quali Schuler ha dato un nuovo volto e un nuovo nome.
