When the influential cult Japanese director Sohgo Ishii made a film with the experimental German band Einstürzende Neubauten during their trip to Japan in 1985, the result was an hour-long aural and visual meditation on the human capacity for destruction and creative renewal amid contemporary urban ruins. Partly filmed in a soon to be demolished ironworks building, the music appears to rise out of the surroundings like an inevitable force, a natural expression of man in the abandoned detritus of contrete and machinery that he himself created.
Combining experimental techniques with elaborate choreography and uniquerly Japanese elements such as the incorporation of Butoh dancers, this film os a rarely seen treasure that documents the creative combination of two extraordinary artiastic visions. Long out of print, this is the first time that this legendary movie can be found on DVD.
