Al posto del villaggio di Fengjie ora c`è la grande diga delle Tre Gole. Il villaggio è stato sommerso, il nuovo quartiere è ancora in costruzione. Ci sono cose da salvare e cose da lasciare indietro. Han Sanming, un minatore, si reca a Fengjie in cerca della ex moglie che non vede da sedici anni. Anche Shen Hong, un`infermiera, arriva a Fengjie per cercare il marito che non torna a casa da due anni.
