The victim of a gangland killing in New Orleans is discovered to be carrying the plague. Medical officer Clinton Reed (Richard Widmark) begins a desperate race against time to stop an epidemic that would wipe out the city.

A medical examiner discovers that an innocent shooting victim in a robbery died of bubonic plague. With only 48 hours to find the killer, who is now a ticking time bomb threatening the entire city, a grisly manhunt through the seamy underwold of the New Orleans Waterfront is underway.
