Claire è una graziosa ballerina che da New York si dirige a Budapest con la speranza di essere ammessa in una prestigiosa scuola di ballo diretta dal celebre coreografo Sandor. Purtroppo viene respinta alla selezione, dove conosce un giovane antiquario americano, Jason. Insieme a lui visita una villa abbandonata dove è vissuta una danzatrice, Nathalie Moruath, morta nel 1895. Improvvisamente Claire non riconosce più Jason e inizia a dubitare sulla sua stessa identita: l'anima di Nathalie sembra essere entrata in possesso di lei.
