Michelangelo Merisi Caravaggio (1573-1610) was the last, perhaps the greatest, and certainly the most controversial painter of the Italian Renaissance. This stylish, adventurous tribute to the outlandish artist is directed by Jarman and is further proof of his ability to stretch artistic invention. The temperaments of Jarman and Caravaggio are well-suited; the result is a bold and quirky film with contemporary touches, spectacular camera work and an impressionistic feel.
