Description

A tantalizing documentary as hilarious as it is tragic, the critically acclaimed theatrical hit LOST IN LA MANCHA tracks maverick filmmaker Terry Gilliam's madcap mission to film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. As he struggles to complete his masterpiece, he and his cast and crew are beset by obstacles more catastrophic than anything Hollywood could have imagined.

With an all-star cast featuring Johnny Depp (Chocolat, Donnie Brasco) and one of cinema's most daring directors at the helm (Brazil, 12 Monkeys), Gilliam's larger-than-life project seems destined for success. And yet, Gilliam's fanciful dream turns into a filmmaker's nightmare as a limited budget, the deafening roar of F-16s flying overhead, and a hailstorm straight from the Bible all conspire to halt the film's production. Capturing this mayhem on camera, the filmmakers were granted unlimited, behind-the-scenes access to Gilliam's frantic but inspired creation. With Jeff Bridges as narrator (The Big Lebowski), they include surviving footage from the film and intimate interviews with an infectiously energetic Gilliam, his cast, and his crew to reveal what must be the only 'unmaking of' in the history of cinema.

Der Film ist nicht so sehr spannend. Es ist dennoch interessant zu sehen wie eine Filmproduktion dermassen in die Hosen gehen kann. (Johnny Depp tritt übrigens sehr kurz auf)

Der Film bietet dem Zuschauer einen ausgezeichneten Einblick, wie Filme funktionieren, wie sie produziert werden und in diesem Fall was alles schief gehen kann. Ein gewisses Interesse an Filmproduktionen und Technik ist bei diesem Film sicherlich Voraussetzung. Wenn dieses vorhanden ist, werdet ihr nicht enttäuscht werden.

Ich habe mir mehr von dem Film versprochen. Der Einblick in die Regiearbeit von Terry Gilliam ist höchstens für Hardcore-Fans oder Regisseure interessant. Ansonsten ist die Geschichte kurz zusammengefasst. Ein paar Dinge gehen schief, der Hauptdarsteller wird krank, Flugzeuge stören den Ton und es regnet einmal heftig. Ansonsten sieht man kaum Szenen des bereits Gedrehten, Johnny Depp und Vanessa Paradis haben wirklich ultrakurze Kurzauftritte (warum zum Teufel ist Depp auf dem Cover?!) und auch sonst bleibt die Dokumentation sehr blass. Fazit: Eventuell fürs Fernsehen geeignet, auf DVD oder im Kino ist "Lost in La Mancha" seinen Preis nicht wert. Für mich Geldmache zur Schadensbegrenzung eines missglückten Projektes.
