Il film racconta due giorni nella vita di Saul Auslander, prigioniero ungherese che lavora in uno dei forni crematori di Auschwitz. Dopo aver scoperto il cadavere di un ragazzo che pensa essere suo figlio, tenterà l'impossibile: salvare le spoglie e trovare un rabbino per seppellirlo.
