Classic British crime thriller starring Jack Hawkins as Inspector George Gideon of Scotland Yard. Dedicated family man and all-round straight arrow, Gideon is used to being in the front line in the wave of crime and corruption sweeping the nation's capital but even for him, today is a bad day. It starts with him having to confront a fellow office of taking graft who strenuously denies the claim.

When the officer dies later that day, however, Gideon's attention is piqued. In one day, Gideon must handle a murder in Manchester and a burglary in London both committed by the same known villain before being shot during a separate fracas. Upon returning home at the end of the day, he gets short shrift from his family for forgetting to pick up the salmon - little thanks does the nation's protector receive and none does he ask.

Directed by the great American western director John Ford and made in Ireland, this film went on to spin off a TV series 'Gideon's Way'.
