Jane Morton, psychiatre, a une bonne raison de vouloir s`éloigner de son quotidien. Lorsque le cas de Dorothy Mills se présente, elle est volontaire. Cette adolescente qui vit sur une petite ile au large de l`Irlande est accusée de tentative de meurtre sur un bébé dont elle avait la garde. En arrivant sur l`ile, Jane découvre une jeune fille fragile, aussi effrayée
qu`effrayante. Elle y trouve surtout un monde clos, coupé de tout, régi par d’étranges lois et dominé par la figure du pasteur local, qui impose sa foi. Jane comprend que le cas de Dorothy dépasse tout ce qu’elle a pu étudier jusque-là. Dans les méandres de l’esprit de la jeune fille se cachent beaucoup trop de secrets. Jane va vite se retrouver confrontée aux limites de la vérité, de l’esprit, et à ses propres fantomes.

Jane Morton (Carice van Houten) is a psychotherapist who has been summoned to a small island community off the coast of Ireland to investigate a case of a profoundly disturbed young woman. Dorothy Mills (Jenn Murray) is a teenager who strangled a young girl outside a church for no apparent reason; she`s being kept in the village hospital, where she displays a broad variety of bizarre and violent behavior. Jane soon diagnoses Dorothy as suffering from multiple personality disorder and attempts to sort out the various anti-social identities that battle for control of her mind. But Pastor Ross (Gary Lewis), head of the local church, has a different view of Dorothy`s problem - he`s convinced Dorothy has been possessed by the devil, and he believes an exorcism is the cure, not therapy. A number of Ross`s parishioners share his views and don`t want Jane imposing her big-city ways on them, even as the doctor is getting to the roots of Dorothy`s problems.

Sehr gut gemacht, überragende junge Hauptdarstellerin, tolle Bilder. Zwar nur wenig Neues, aber gut gespielt. Der Vergleich mit "Der Exorzist" ist zwar übertrieben, und vieles ist vorhersehbar, aber dennoch ein Film, der Aufmersamkeit verdient.
