Thrill-seeker Emmie (Alyssa Lobit), backpacking through Southeast Asia, returns home to Los Angeles after receiving a mysterious letter from a companion of her recently- deceased dug-addicted mother, Sunny (Alexis Rhee). Emmie is looking to retrieve what Sunny left for her and has a single clue in hand: the name of a dingy motel in the San Fernando Valley that Sunny last called home.
On her personal quest Emmie gets help from her sister, Eve (Catherine Kresge). Over the years the two had pushed rather than drifted apart, due to their different approaches in dealing with their mother. Eve stayed behind and took care of Sunny until the dirty end. Meanwhile, Emmie took off for more exotic pastures, determined to live her own life.
The search for their mother's legacy exposes old wounds and prevents the sisters from getting past their emotional stand-off. But their travels through the dangerous underbelly of the Valley challenges the sisters to come to peace with themselves, their mother, and each other. "The Things We Carry" is an intense journey of self-discovery with an emotional climax that will leave viewers in tears.
