Serena is based upon a novel of the same name by author Ron Rash. The film features newlyweds Serena and George Pemberton and details their marriage struggles. It is set in Depression-Era North Carolina, and follows the Pemberton`s struggles in their marriage. The future of the family`s timber company becomes unclear when the family begins their struggle with infertility and the wife`s inability to bear children.
Ambientato alla fine degli anni `20 sullo sfondo delle montagne del North Carolina, la pellicola vede come protagonisti George e Serena Pemberton, due giovani neosposi, bellissimi e innamoratissimi, che iniziano a lavorare per quello che presto diventerà un vero e proprio impero del legname. Forti del loro potere e del fascino che esercitano sugli altri, i Pemberton non permettono a nessuno di ostacolare il loro folle amore e le loro grandi ambizioni. Quando Serena, però, scopre il passato segreto di George e si trova a fare i conti con il proprio inesorabile destino, l`unione tra i due comincia a sgretolarsi, facendo presagire un difficile epilogo.
