Wer Rom liebt wird diesen Film lieben. Der Wahlrömer Fellini (der ja eigentlich aus Rimini stammt) zeigt die Stadt mit dem erstaunten Auge eines Fremden, der versucht die vielfälltigen und widersprüchlichen Eindrücke der ewigen Stadt irgendwie zu ordnen um dabei festzustellen, dass dies nicht möglich ist. Rom ist mal erhaben und nobel mal vulgär und dreckig, mal der Hort aller Heiligkeit, mal das Tor zur Hölle. So sind auch seine Einwohner, die allesamt wie Schauspieler im riesigen Theater Rom agieren. Hier ist Fellini mehr Beobachter als Regisseur. Fellini versteht es wie kein anderer durch Überzeichnung der Charaktere deren echen Wesen zu erfassen und auf Film zu bannen. Ein filmisches Denkmal an eine Stadt die ihrerseits aus unzähligen Denkmälern besteht.
