It's 1963, and America is in mourning following the death of President Kennedy. But Charlotte Flax - Winona Ryder, fresh from Heathers - has troubles of her own. It's not just that this straight-laced teenager has started clashing with her more free-spirited mother (Cher; Mask, Moonstruck): other things are changing too - boys are more interesting, and life seems a little more complicated. With a sensational soundtrack filled with glorious pre-Beatles pop (not to mention Cher's version of The Shoop Shoop Song, which lodged at Number One for five weeks), Mermaids is a warm and incisive coming of age story.
