Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director whose new project is collapsing around him, along with his life. One of the greatest films about film ever made, Federico Fellini’s 8½ turns one man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema. An early working title for 8½ was The Beautiful Confusion, and Fellini’s masterpiece is exactly that: a shimmering dream, a circus, and a magic act. Also featured is Fellini’s rarely seen first film for television, Fellini: A Director’s Notebook (1969). Produced by Peter Goldfarb, this “imagined documentary” of Fellini on Fellini is a kaleidoscope of unfinished projects, all of which provide a fascinating and candid window into the director’s unique creative process.

the towering masterpiece of federico fellini's career follows burned-out celebrity director guido (marcello mastroianni) through a series of daily encounters and wild daydreams, the first of which finds him ascending into the clouds during a traffic jam. seeking solace and rejuvenation at a remote health spa for the rich and privileged, he continues to encounter journalists, his producer, his mistress, and, most inconvenient of all, his aloof wife, luisa. flashing among past, present, future, and fantasy, guido longs to make a pure and honest film while his producer goads him into a big budget science fiction spectacle.

Wieder ist, wie bei criterion collection üblich, der preis nicht ganz billig, dafür gibt's wirklich viele gute sachen auf dieser DVD, wie zum beispiel einem deutschsprachigen doku über nino rotta und viele zuvor unveröffentlichte Fotos. Auch die Introduction von Terry Gilliam ist sehr sehenswert, denn er bringt es auf den punkt: 81/2 ist ein film, der für jeden Filmliebhaber und Filmemacher eine unglaubliche Inspiration ist. Meiner Ansicht nach der grösste Film über Film überhaupt und Fellinis vollendetstes Werk.

Für jeden der Filme mag, die mehr als nur unterhalten, ist dieser Film ein muss.

Noch nie habe ich einen so selbstreflexiven Film gsehen. Ein Meisterwerk, und das nicht nur weil er von Fellini ist.
