Malcolm McDowell and David Warner star in this sci-fi adventure directed by Nicholas Meyer. In 1893 in London, author H.G. Wells (McDowell) has succeeded in building a time machine and is showing it to his dinner guests one evening when it is hijacked by his friend John Leslie Stevenson (Warner) after the police arrive.

It quickly becomes apparent that Stevenson, a surgeon, is the serial killer known as Jack the Ripper. Wells follows Stevenson to San Francisco in 1979 where he is shocked to discover the chaos of modern society. Mistakenly believing that Stevenson has died, Wells begins a romance with Amy Robbins (Mary Steenburgen) and shares his secret invention with her.

However, when they venture into the future together, they discover that Stevenson has continued his killing spree and now, Amy's life is in danger.

London 1893 is home to a killer with a macabre nickname... and also to a visionary genius who would write The Time Machine. But what if H.G. Wells' invention wasn't fiction? And what if Jack the Ripper escaped capture fleeing his own time to take refuge in ours - with Wells himself in pursuit?
From writer/director Nicholas Meyer, Time After Time is a marvelous entertainment of shivery suspense and sly social comment. In modern-day San Francisco, the Ripper (David Warner) finds our violent age to his liking. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) dislikes the brave new world of fast food and television, far from the utopia he envisioned. But he is cheered by the emancipation of women, particularly one irresistible banker (Mary Steenburgen). For mystery, romance and excitement, Time After Time is time well spent.

Neuauflage für Sammler bestimmt erwünscht. Junge Leute lassen sich damit vermutlich weniger begeistern. Man hört ab und zu vom "Steampunk Genre" aber kann den Begriff nirgends so recht zuordnen weil Steampunk seine Wurzeln in der Vergangenheit geschlagen hat und relativ passiv in die Zukunft wächst. Nun dieser Film ist ein perfektes Steampunk-Früchtchen. Zum Inhalt kann man sagen dass es sich um eine Komödie handelt und dass es einige Plotholes gibt. Zum Beispiel ermordet John die Freundin von Amy obwohl er Amy bereits begegnet ist und offenbar weiss wie sie aussieht. Was man dann wohl als Frustmord bezeichnen muss. Die aufgeworfenen Fragen sind unterhaltsam, wobei das Stereotyp-Casting für "John" damals wohl das aktuellste Problem darstellte. Es wird die Frage gestellt wem die Zukunft denn gehöre (und ich wünschte mir die Technik heutzutage würde auch für positives verwendet..), jedenfalls hätte es Herberts Zeitmaschine mit der Google Standortbestimmung heutzutage sehr schwer, Scherz. Ein kreativer und empfehlenswerter Film!

Jack the Ripper flieht mittels Zeitmaschine in unsere Zeit..........ein kleiner Klassiker mit guten Schauspielern! Für diesen Preis ein Schnäppchen!
