In this vivid adaptation of Graham Greene`s novel about the seedy British beachfront underworld, Richard Attenborough appears in top form as petty gangster Pinkie Brown. The manipulative thug rashly commits a murder and uses a waitress (Carol Marsh) to provide his alibi, with unexpected consequences.

Der skrupellose Kleinganove Pinkie treibt Schutzgelder auf der Pferderennbahn ein und geht dabei über Leichen. Als er seinen Rivalen Fred um die Ecke bringt, beginnen für ihn die Probleme. Der Mord wird zufällig von der Kellnerin Rose beobachtet und Freds Freundin Ida stellt auf eigene Faust Nachforschungen an. Um seine Spuren zu verwischen, bleibt Pinkie nur eine Möglichkeit: Er muss Rose zum Schweigen bringen.
