In the unforgiving landscape of the Outback, Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) is presented with an impossible proposition by local lawman Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone): to save his younger brother Mikey from the noose, he must track down and kill Arthur (Danny Huston), his increasingly unhinged older sibling.

A palpable sense of foreboding builds in the oppressive heat, as each character takes on their punishing moral dilemmas and the cycle of violence appears unstoppable.

The Proposition is a visually stunning tale of layalty, betrayal and retribution set on the frontier of 1880's Australia.
In the harsh, unforgiving landscape of the Outback, Charlie Burns is presented with an impossible proposition by local law enforcer Captain Stanley; the only way to save his younger brother Mikey from the gallows is to track down and kill Arthur, his psychotic older brother. Meanwhile, Captain Stanley has other problems to contend with. Having given up their comfortable life, he is desperate to shield his innocent wife Martha from the brutalities of their new surroundings. He also faces mounting pressure from renegade natives and his superior Eden Fletcher to bring order to the region.
An uneasy sense of foreboding grows as events close in and each character faces a punishing moral dilemma that leads to a murderous climax...

... noch immer einer meiner absoluten top-filme und ein absolutes meisterwerk, das seinesgleichen sucht. unglaublich poetisch und emotional. auch bin ich immer noch geradezu entsetzt, dass dieser film nie in die schweizer kinos kam...

und ohne jegliche Form von Frohsinn. Fantastisch dass es noch solche Filme gibt. Da wird sich aber auch kein Deut um irgendwelche Mainstream-Verblödungs-Mechanismen gekümmert und einfach nur pures Kino auf höchstem Niveau zelebriert. Dank dem mir völlig unbekannten australischen Regisseur John Hillcoat, der wirklich begnadete Bilder auf die Leinwand gezaubert hat!
Überragend auch die schauspielerischen Leistungen von Guy Pearce und allen Andern - da hatte man bei der Besetzung der Rollen wahrlich ein glückliches Händchen!

Gesetzlos - Die Geschichte des Ned Kelly greift auch dieses Thema auf - lässt indes die Brillanz dieses Meisterwerks vermissen.

Vor kurzem, also 2008, hat sich der Premierminister von Australien auf beeindruckende und wirklich eindringliche Weise bei den Aborigines im Namen der Nation in aller Form für die schweren Verbrechen entschuldigt - Respekt !!!
Ich bete für eine Blu-Ray Disc Version davon

Ich habe kein so guter Western gesehen seit "Schneller als der Tod". Sehr zu empfehlen auch denen die Western nicht mögen, denn hier wurde auf der ganzen Linie gut gearbeitet. Von der Musik bis zum kleinsten Detail stimmt einfach alles. Ein Guy Pearce wie man ihn noch nie gesehen hat.
