Description

DELUXE EDITION. In the wake of Abraham Lincolns assassination, seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President, Vice President, and Secretary of State. The lone woman charged, Mary Surratt, 42, owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth, 26, and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks. Against the ominous backdrop of post-Civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer Frederick Aiken, a 28-year-old Union war hero, reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt before a military tribunal. Aiken realizes his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt, her own son, John. As the nation turns against her, Surratt is forced to rely on Aiken to uncover the truth and save her life. Dieser Streifen hat meinen Geschmack getroffen. Gute und interessante Dialoge, ein tolles Ensemble und tolle Sets. Die Geschichte war mir bis dato unbekannt. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass sich der ganze Prozess auf diese Weise abgespielt hat. Auch die Frage was höher einzustufen ist (die Rechte eines Einzelnen, oder der Gesellschaft) wird hier ohne erzieherisch oder belehrend zu sein aufgeworfen. Für mich ganz klar ein...

Natürlich weiss jeder, dass A.Lincoln eines gewaltsamen Todes starb. Der Rest, also wer wurde angeklagt und verurteilt mit Vollstreckung des Urteils, wird gerne in den Geschichtsbüchern ausgeklammert (der Verlauf war mir unbekannt). Insofern eine Geschichte, die nicht nur das Wissen erweitert. Fazit: R.Redford, bekannt für seine liberale politische Einstellung, hat hier eine überaus interessante Produktion abgeliefert. Konstitutionelle Rechte für jeden Bürger eines Landes vor einer unabhängigen Gerichtsbarkeit. Nicht nur in den USA sondern auch anderswo in der Welt kommen einem da manchmal Zweifel auf. Darstellerisch ziemlich gut und bis in Nebenrollen prominent besetzt ist der Film sicher eine Empfehlung für politik- und geschichtsinteressierte Cineasten. Da dialogstark wird er wohl action-affine eher langweilen.
