Hugh Hudson directs this action adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' novel. Christopher Lambert stars as Tarzan of Greystoke, who as an infant was orphaned on the west coast of Africa following a shipwreck, and was rescued and brought up by a family of apes. 20 years later, Belgian explorer Capitaine Phillippe D'Arnot (Ian Holm) encounters the man who has now become Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, and is rescued from a terrible death by the ape-man. When D'Arnot finds evidence to prove that Tarzan is the direct descendant of the Earl of Greystoke, he takes it upon himself to return the man to civilization. However, Edwardian England is very different to the wilds of the African jungle, and Tarzan finds himself torn between two irreconcilable worlds.

Nach Jahrzehnten endlich fälliger der Vorlage würdiger Tarzanfilm. Mit einenem hervorragenden Christoph Lambert (schade das er anschliessend nichts besseres aus seinem Talent gemacht hat), einem unvergesslichen Ralph Richardson und einem wunderschönen Soundtrack (wer kann mir den in digitaler Form besorgen/vermitteln - kann leider nie auf CD raus!).
-> Ebenfals bemerkenswert der zukünftige LOTR-Bilbo-Darsteller als bester Freund von Greystoke.
-> Kurios: die im engl. Originalton nachsynchronisierte Andie McDowell (4 Hochzeiten und ein Todesfall) - der Regisseur fand ihre Stimme unpassend.

Für mich der realistischste Tarzanfilm überhaupt. Schöne Landschaften, Liebe, Tragik. Nicht der übliche "Ich Tarzan du Jane"-Kitsch!
