In the early 1860s, a group of young artists broke away from the excessively rigid rules of the Academy and came together to paint with more freedom. These artists included Edgar Degas, Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir. They were supported by Edouard Manet but had difficulty winning over the public. In 1874, when the official salon jury rejected their work, they held their own exhibition. An art critic sarcastically entitled his review "the exhibition of Impressionists", a reference to the title of one of Monet's paintings on display: Impression, Sunrise. He thus, unintentionally, gave this new art movement its name: Impressionism.
