A Mea Shearim, il quartiere più ortodosso nella parte ebrea di Gerusalemme, Meïr e Rivka, sposati da dieci anni, si amano teneramente ma soffrono perché non hanno figli. Malka, sorella di Rivka e innamorata di Yaakov, musicista che ha ripudiato la vita religiosa, è costretta ad accettare le nozze con Yussef, combinate dalla madre e dal rabbino.
