Created on the initiative of Emmanuel Krivine, La Chambre Philharmonique likes to see itself as the achievement of a utopia. An orchestra of a new kind, comprising members of the finest European ensembles motivated by the same musical urgency, La Chambre Philharmonique places pleasure at the heart of a new adventure in music.
It is also a space for research and exchange, identifying the instruments and period techniques appropriate to each repertory.
In May 2014, La Chambre Philharmonique performed the Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz in a memorable concert at the Cité de la Musique in Paris. It is this occasion that is now presented on DVD. The symphony is complemented by four fascinating bonus features: Emmanuel Krivine discusses with some of the musicians their work in common and the practice of period-instrument performance, three of the orchestra’s principals (violinist, bassoonist and timpanist) demonstrate the specific characteristics of their instruments, and the DVD offers the option of watching the entire symphony with commentary by Krivine.
At the moment when he is about to become Music Director of the Orchestre National de France, here is the rewarding testimony of an illustrious musician, highly respected by all those who work with him, who talks about music with simplicity, humour and sincerity.
